Cleanings are recommended every six months. The Cavitron  or Ultrasonic Scalar is used to blast plaque or tarter from teeth. This is analternative to manual scaling which uses of a sharp scaler or curette to remove hardened deposits of extraneous matter from the teeth.

Plaque is the build up of natural oral bacteria on food debris that remains on the surface and between the teeth and gums. Combing with minerals in the saliva, it ultimately forms a hard, rough sediment known as dental tartar or calculus which attracts further plaque buildup. The reason cleanings are so important is that  cleanings improve the health of your gums. Healthy gums mean healthy teeth. Gums tend to recede from tarter that accumulates.  This exposing the roots of the teeth causing them to become sensitive and eventually destroy periodontal attachments or tendons that hold the tooth to the bone, resulting in the bone receding and the tooth being rejected by the body.  Once teeth start to become loose there is no saving the teeth.
